Our Distinctive Approach to Recovery & Youth Support
MY TESTIMONY—
From Tragedy to Triumph
I have personally experienced the challenges of addiction. As a teenager, I frequently felt lost and hopeless. My kind mother had me when she was only seventeen. For much of my life, I didn't know who my biological father was; I finally learned his identity at age 35. Being an only child, I often sensed something missing in my life, a feeling that became more troubling and unsettling as I grew older.
Early Struggles With Substance Use
My experimentation with marijuana began in junior high, and it acted as a gateway to other substances like downers and uppers. When those didn't give me the effect I sought, I turned to snorting cocaine. Eventually, this led to an addiction to crack cocaine at the age of twenty-three, which persisted for five years. During that period, I reached rock bottom. Despite seeking help through treatment centers, hospitals, and Cocaine Anonymous, I discovered I lacked the willpower to overcome my addiction alone.
Finding Faith and Transformation
So, I cried out to the Lord, and the power of God invaded my life. A transformative change led me to turn away from my former actions, which caused me to hate what I did. As Galatians 2:20a says, “I have been crucified with Christ; nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me.” Similarly, II Corinthians 5:17 declares, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new Creation has come. The old is gone, the new is here!”
Passion for Helping Youth
As an LCDC (Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor) by the State of Texas,
I'm very passionate about this field because I've seen youth learn to
rebuild their lives without relying on mood/mind-altering chemicals.
Understanding the Impact of Substance Use
Substance use presents a significant behavioral health challenge. Underage drug use is linked to a variety of negative consequences, such as health problems, social challenges, increased risk of violence and motor vehicle accidents, engagement in risky sexual behaviors, cognitive difficulties, and changes in academic performance. This remains a significant behavioral health concern.
